A few days ago,I was thinking about those moments, when the internet absolutely refuses to connect. That was the era when broadband in India was still in its infancy. It so happens that only one these days, I have something very important to do in the internet. Like chatting with my girlfriend (I take advantage from the fact that my parents do not read this blog!!!!). :-). I even remember getting so frustrated that I used to abuse it. But I found out that you can always get the computer to work properly by being affectionate with it. That is not the point here.
The point is......I happened to read this article, in The Hindu. It dawned on me, that it is 'virtually' impossible to think of a day without internet. The very thought makes me shudder. The first thing I do, when I wake up each morning is to switch on my computer. Then comes the ritual of brushing the teeth, drowning the morning's share of caffeine, even before thinking about the day's chores. What do I do when I first enter my office? You are right, switch on my computer and check mails. I know, it is just a 10 min drive from my home, but then my heart still believes that my inbox will be richer by at least one mail. Whether the mail is important mail or not important is totally a different matter.
I have had those moments even in the US. So not even this place is immune to bad connectivity. Only then I remembered that I had to mail my friend about the way Malinga caused heartaches in South African dressing room in a span of 4 deliveries, earlier in the day. Alas ! I am left imagining that I am writing to my friend. However, I could not hide my excitement and I decided to call my friend, who I assume was sleeping. But then the lady from Reliance says I have insufficient balance to complete the call. Even to top up the card, I need internet connection. Oh yeah, while at it, I wanted to add that funny video that I checked in Youtube, in between my work, to my ever expanding Orkut video list. Damn it how am I going to remember this later? These are only the few 'essential' things that I have on top of my head right now, of course, apart from browsing through random profiles in Orkut, Hi5, Facebook and Myspace. Oh yeah, not to forget all the webpages that I have open before me in the office, just to make sure that my boss thinks am working, if he happens to drop by ! Oh by the way, I just meant google. That's right, two google pages, one personalized and one classic home, both in Firefox as well as in IE.
On a serious note, it never occurred to me that so many things could be done offline. Even though I religiously used to clean my desktop back in India, I have only done it once or twice with my own laptop. It is time I hit the defrag button. I also liked the bookmark idea, it is time I grouped the lineup of 5o odd links that I thought might be useful sometime. Anyway, while we all talk about the usefulness of internet and how it has revolutionized our lives, there is also life apart from it. I spend substantial amount of time every day in front of the computer, even though am not a computer geek ! So for all the googloholics like me, this article was definitely an eye opener. Oh yeah, got to catch the latest updates in cricinfo before I go to sleep. Phew ! So much for the eye opener...........................................
