Try as I might, it is quite difficult for me to write about anything that does not involve cricket. Yesterday, I wanted to write about the developments in cricket over the weekend. Most importantly the pall that surrounds Pakistan cricket. First I would like to offer my condolences to a coach, Bob Woolmer, who revolutionized cricket coaching. It was truly a depressing weekend. I still am quite suspicious about his death. There are quite a few things which arouses my suspicion. Anyway, whatever has happened has happened. This is the first time, since I started following world cups from 1992, that we will not witness a Pakistan India clash. This would take a bit of shine off the World Cup. Even that would be clouded by the bigger gloom that surrounds the cricketing community today......
My heart goes out to the Bermudans, who were treated like school kids, by the Indians. I hope people can appreciate the efforts that these 'minnows' are putting in, given the fact that the Bermudan team consists of an Accountant, Teacher, Prison van driver and so forth. It is note worthy to mention that Sri Lanka were minnows initially, but they went on to win the most coveted World Cup 10 years later. Even for that matter, Indians were 'almost' minnows when we lifted the Prudential cup in 1983. So, yesterday Indians displayed what they can do best, and more importantly achieved what was needed of them, to keep the hopes of progressing to the next stage alive.
Did I not say that I wanted to write about Pakisan Cricket? I have always liked Inzamam, when he was a 22 year kid, and even now, 15 years later, I still like him very much. Calmness personified, always lets the bat talk. It is sad that World Cup matches failed to bring the best out of him. I do not understand what is the fuss surrounding his retirement? It was inevitable. I am sure I would miss Inzy. It is also good to see the PCB getting revamped. Infact now I am going to support Pakistan in their game against Zimbabwe. I would have never thought of Zimbabwe as a formidable opponent to Pakistan, but I cannot say the same thing at this juncture. Pakistan would play for pride and more importantly I hope they win this game for Woolmer, if not for anyone else. Go Pa(c)K !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
